THE FLOW MOTION STORY

Like many young Swedes, Per Mårs grew up surrounded by snow and ice with the dream of one day playing hockey in the NHL.

That dream took him all the way to the Swedish National Team and the 2001 NHL Entry Draft where he was selected in the 3rd round by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

As a player, Per was fanatical about his equipment. Ever curious about its performance benefits, he was constantly tinkering with his skates, sticks and other gear. A back injury that plagued Per during the early years of his pro career, led him to his greater curiosity about the biomechanics of skating and its relationship to stability, balance and fitness.

While ultimately injuries ended Per’s hockey career prematurely, his real passion was born through his quest to improve his training methods and the technology he could access. By 2007 Per was well on his way to inventing the early applications for Flow Motion Technology. Initially for inline training that would more closely replicate the instability that you find in the radius of an ice blade. In 2011, Per gained initial funding and the Marsblade roller frame was first prototyped. The company was founded that year in Östersund Sweden, Per’s hometown and the heart of Sweden’s winter sports mecca.

By early 2013, Per and his small staff had the roller frame market-ready and began to take initial wholesale orders while launching initial grass roots and social media marketing. An e-commerce platform was established that continues today as a primary distribution channel for the Marsblade brand. After building the brand and use case for Flow Motion Technology in off-ice hockey training, Per began to conceive the application of the technology for ice hockey and built the initial prototypes of the Marsblade Ice Holder. From there, Per and his team established the framework for what is now the FMT Innovation Lab.

They began to explore the broader applications of Flow Motion Technology, steering the innovation from its founding roots in hockey to the broader focus on performance innovation in a range of skate and ski sports disciplines.
